Topic: A beachhead on an untamed shore - a former ethicist battles living kidney donor selection
Presenter:
Robert W. Steiner, M.D., UCSD SOM
Location: Medical Teaching Facility (MTF) 175
Presentation
Abstract:
Kidney transplant centers in the US employ widely varying selection criteria for living kidney donors. All kidney donors accept risk. How then do transplant centers access what risks are ethically acceptable and what are not? Are we turning away potentially viable donors without good reason? Or might the chronic shortage of organs lead some to underestimate medical and other risks?  Dr. Steiner will discuss his work on donor education and risk quantification as grounds for a defensible donor selection policy.
