Abstract: |
Most ethical dilemmas encountered by physicians center on the individual patient. These dilemmas often occur at the end of life; issues of withholding and withdrawing life sustaining treatment, medical futility, and other end-of-life issues play a prominent role in clinical and ethical discussion. However, physicians also face situations in which values centered on the individual patient (e.g., beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy) come into conflict with societal values (e.g.,resource allocation, economic issues). This talk will address some of these broader conflicts, including issues of confidentiality and deception. A model for examining these dilemmas will also be discussed.
