Abstract
: |
Dr. Liang will present the case of a patient with stage IIIB breast cancer under the care of an academic oncologist. Our focus will be the legal and ethical issues associated with end of life health care. |
Discussion
Questions: |
- Consider standard of care and medical malpractice. Are these relevant in this case?
- Consider the concept of informed consent. Does informed consent require formal discussion of all issues at the end of life, particularly when patients provide blanket consents?
- Does end of life care that potentially deviates from the norm require reports to the board of medicine?
- When patients provide blanket consent, is "experimentation" a conflict of interest from a financial perspective? from a professional perspective?
- How far do advanced directives extend? What is included?
