 November 12, 2008

Topic: Ethics of Brain Imaging Research
Presenter: Lisa T. Eyler, Ph.D., Assist. Professor, Depart. of Psychiatry, UC San Diego; Clinical Research Psychologist, VA San Diego
Location: SDSU Foundation: Sky Park
Discussion: Brain imaging is an increasingly popular method to explore the neural underpinnings of normal and pathological behavior. The use of this tool in healthy individuals has raised ethical issues about researchers' responsibilities for evaluation and communication of incidental clinical findings revealed through brain scans.  We will discuss recommendations that have been put forth for dealing with these issues.  Recently, brain imaging has also been used to explore how humans make ethical decisions.  We will discuss some examples of this research and whether brain imaging helps us to understand ethical behavior in a useful way.
