In 2005, several papers highlighted a growing concern regarding clinical trials that were conducted far beyond the point at which sufficient data had been obtained. In one example, despite the number of relevant findings from earlier trials that babies sleeping on their backs were less likely to die of SIDS, superfluous studies continued to be conducted. Bad research practices such as this can lead to a myriad of troubling outcomes from wasted grant money to unnecessary deaths. This discussion will focus on what can and should be done to revise the practice of conducting unnecessary research studies. |
