Topic: Notions of Privacy
Presenter: Chad Barrett, Regulatory Compliance Analyst, Division of Research Affairs, SDSU
Location: SDSU Foundation: Sky Park
Discussion: The ethical guidelines that guide researchers in Western countries require that private health information be treated confidentially. However, notions of privacy often vary across cultures. An article by Monshi and Zieglmayer (2004) and DuBois (2004) explore the difficulties of establishing a single definition of privacy that can be applied in various cultural settings. Mr. Barrett's presentation will discuss the two questions raised by Monshi and Zieglmayer (2004): "First, can a single definition of privacy possibly do justice to the cultural variations that exist, or does a conceptual definition inevitably run the risk of ethnocentrism? Second, to what extent is strict compliance with research regulations or ethics codes ethically justifiable when following the rules will obviously cause un-ease in the international participants?"
