Topic: Is the Hippocratic Oath Ethical?
Presenter: Matthew A. Allison, MD, MPH
Family and Preventive Medicine, UCSD
Location: SDSU Foundation: Sky Park
Discussion: As part of the graduation ceremony from medical school, many students recite and take the oath of Hippocrates. Notably, this oath has changed since the initial writing.  Due to these changes, some students elect not to take this oath on the grounds that they do not believe it is pertinent to the modern medical context. For this session of the journal club, we will explore the differences between the original and contemporary versions of the Hippocratic oath, review both medical and non-medical opinions about the oath and discuss whether the individual assertions, as well as the overall spirit of this oath, are relevant and necessary for modern medical practice.
