What really happened and what have we learned? |

Seven years after Jesse’s Gelsinger’s untimely death in a gene therapy protocol at the University of Pennsylvania, little new information has circulated about the causes underlying his reaction to the study drug. Most research in this area has been conducted by scientists in Wilson’s own lab. References to Jesse continue to cite allegations that were circulated in 1999; little attempt has been made to re-examine the events and attempt to obtain a current perspective. Ms. Bigby's interest in this was precipitated by a student in her Human Subjects Protections and IRBs class who was a former fellow in the Wilson lab. He was by no means an apologist for Wilson, but he was concerned that propagation of half-truths did not further the cause of research ethics training. |
