Topic: The "Is and Ought" of Ethics Centers
Presenter: Michael Kalichman, UCSD Research Ethics Program
Location: SDSU Foundation: Sky Park
Discussion: Recently, USA Today ran a brief story on the state of bioethics. It called attention to some of the difficulties surrounding the definition of what we mean by someone being an "ethicist" and what it is that they are qualified to speak about (see http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-09-28-bioethics-expertise_x.htm)

This very timely question has now come up in two articles in the most recent issue of the Hastings Center Report:

• Wolf SM, Kahn JP (2005): Bioethics Matures: The Field Faces the Future. Hastings Center Report 35(4): 22-24.

• Solomon MZ (2005): Realizing Bioethics' Goals in Practice: Ten Ways "Is" can help "ought." Hastings Center Report 35(4): 40-47.

The discussion will focus on first summarizing the content of these papers and then a consideration of what this means about what is needed and how it can be accomplished in the San Diego region.
