COURSE OBJECTIVE

Provide graduate students and postdoctoral scientists with skills and resources to increase the effectiveness of their communication.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

The course is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the experimental sciences; however, much of the course material is relevant to pre- and post-doctoral trainees in all disciplines.

COURSE FORMAT

This course emphasizes active learning. Students are expected to interact through frequent discussions. During initial course meetings general background material will be provided on the subject of communication in science. Subsequent meetings will focus on the elements of effective communication in a variety of specific forums commonly used in science. The goal of initial discussions will be to develop a checklist or evaluation form for for each topic area. These will then be used by course participants in completing the assignments.

ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments will be planned during the first two sessions. Although none will be excessively time-consuming, all will be designed to improve skills and appreciation for effective communication.

CREDIT

Graduate students are expected to take this course for credit. The only grading options are P/F or S/U. To pass the course, you must complete the assignments and attend 8 of the 10 meetings. Postdoctoral scientists may audit the course; however, registration with the instructors is required.
