REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS

  1. 2-minute talks (Date Due: April 16):
    Guided preparation and presentation in class.

  2. Elective Assignment: Choose one of the following in an area of interest to you. Attend, critically evaluate, and return to class with your observations (Date Due: April 30):
    • Science talk
    • Job talk
    • Undergrad teaching: identify an outstanding teacher based on teaching awards or suggestions from faculty in your Department or the staff of the Center for Teaching Development

  3. Concept Mapping, Rhetoric, and Communication (Date Due: May 7):
    • Choose either an abstract (250 words or less) or talk (10-minutes) on your research, a recent publication of interest, or an area of research interest.
    • Use concept mapping to plan content.
    • Prepare 2 versions: (1) for a scientific audience of your choice and (2) for a lay audience of your choice.
    • Identify and use selected techniques of rhetoric for your two versions.
